Telchac: A Vacation Destination on the Rise

Published on

Telchac

Telchac hardly needs an introduction: in recent years it has become the go-to beach destination in Yucatán, thanks to its infrastructure and beautiful beaches.

Telchac Puerto is just 30 minutes from Puerto Progreso. This spot on the Yucatán coast is part of the route known as Yucatán’s Emerald Coast. It is quiet most of the year, and many consider it the perfect place to unwind. During Holy Week and summer vacation the town comes alive, and you will see dozens of people strolling the streets to enjoy everything it has to offer.

You will enjoy a spectacular view as you pass through a natural tunnel formed by the local vegetation.

One of Telchac Puerto’s signature touches is the street art on walls, homes and buildings, all with an ocean theme. Its main park is painted with seashells and seafaring scenes, and so is its Municipal Palace.

Along the coastal highway that runs through town you will find a wide variety of restaurants, hotels and vacation rentals, plus all the services you need for a longer stay. There is even a 5-star hotel!

Just 10 minutes from the port is Playa de Coco, a beach with one of the few coconut groves that survived the lethal yellowing epidemic that struck coconut palms across the entire peninsula in the 1980s.

The town square, the small boardwalk and the lighthouse give it a very special charm. Nearby attractions include the Laguna Rosada, an ecological refuge for migratory birds, and Xcambó, an archaeological site with several pyramids, Mayan roads and residential platforms.

Back when Telchac Puerto was a district of Telchac Pueblo, it was called Miramar, and part of that municipality still goes by that name today.

Besides the beach, the Laguna Rosada is another highlight of Telchac Puerto. Just like in Las Coloradas, you can take in its amazing scenery and join a guided tour that explains everything about salt harvesting. You may even spot pink flamingos.
